Phrasal Verbs with CUT: 10 Must-Know for SSC Exams | Day 8

Hello everyone, I hope you are all good. Welcome to the Phrasal Verb Series – Day 8! In Day 7 the trouble with COME was that it had no object of its own, so it kept borrowing a second preposition to hold one. CUT has the opposite problem, and it is the one that actually costs marks. CUT never lets go of its object — something is always being cut — so the particle is not there to supply a noun. It is there to tell you what happened to the piece after the blade passed. Did the thing shrink and stay? Did it disappear? Did the blade itself travel somewhere? Four of today’s verbs — cut down, cut back, cut off, cut out — all translate loosely as “to reduce,” which is exactly why SSC drops them into one option set and waits. Read the story once, learn the ten meanings, then play the games and take the quiz.

📖 The Story — Reena Cuts It Down

March began with nine books on Reena’s table and no plan for any of them. Arun looked at the pile for a while and then made her cut down the whole thing to two — one standard book, one previous-year set — and put the rest under the bed where she could not see them.

Money made the second cut for her. The shop at home had closed in January, and the family had already cut back on everything that was not food or fees, so the test series everyone in her batch had bought was never going to happen.

Then the hostel line was cut off for eleven days in the middle of the month. No wifi, no videos, no lectures. She wrote to Arun that she had lost the month. He wrote back four words: you lost the noise.

What she cut out that week was the part she loved most — the long, beautiful handwritten notes she had been making since school. Forty minutes of copying a page that she never read again. It went, and the forty minutes went to questions.

Kavita called on a Sunday and said the thing nobody says out loud: most people who fail this exam are not people who were never cut out for it. They are people who kept nine books and called it hard work.

At the coaching step on Monday a boy cut in while Reena was still speaking, to explain that selection was really about intelligence. The next mock cut him down to size rather efficiently, and he did not say it again.

The problem she had thought was hers alone turned out to cut across the entire batch — everyone was reading more and testing less, hostel students and day scholars alike, and not one of them had noticed.

Her form had an error in the category column, and four weeks of waiting went nowhere until one typed line in the right place cut through all of it in two days.

On the last Sunday a power failure cut short her mock at question sixty-two. She finished the remaining thirty-eight on paper by candle, timed them, and sent Arun the score. He kept that message.

⚠️ Exam Trap: The standard CUT question puts cut down, cut back, cut off and cut out in one option set, because a dictionary will gloss all four as “reduce” and the first two look almost interchangeable. They are not. Reach for the noun after the blank, not the particle. A measurable quantity takes cut down; money, spending or production takes cut back; a supply or a relationship that existed takes cut off; an item inside something larger takes cut out. Second trap, and it catches good students: cut out and cut out for are unrelated. One word, for, flips the meaning from removing something to being suited to something — and cut out for needs be in front of it, so if the sentence has no form of be, that option is dead on arrival. Third trap: cut in is not cut into. He cut in means he interrupted; he cut into the cake means he sliced it. SSC has used that single letter as the whole question.

🧭 The Four Groups — Why CUT’s Particles Behave As They Do

CUT is firmly transitive: something is always cut. That one fact changes the job of the particle. With COME the particle had to fetch a noun, because the verb could not hold one. CUT already has its noun, so the particle is free to answer a different question — what happened to the piece once the blade had passed? There are only four possible answers, and those four answers are the four groups below. Learn them in this order and the famous four-way option set stops being a guess.

1. It shrinks but stays — down, back, short

Nothing is removed in this group; the thing is simply smaller afterwards. Cut down is the general one and takes almost any measurable noun — sources, hours, sugar, staff, trees. Cut back looks identical in meaning but is nearly always about money or activity, because back carries the sense of pulling in: budgets, spending, production, imports. Cut short is the odd one, and the mistake students make is to treat short as a size word. It is a time word. A visit, a speech, a session or a holiday is cut short; a quantity never is. So when two of these three sit in the same option set, ask one question: is the sentence reducing how much, or how long? How much is down or back; how long is short.

2. It goes away — off, out

Here the separated piece really does leave, and the two particles disagree about what it left. Cut off breaks a connection that already existed: a water supply, a phone line, a road, an allowance, a relative. If you cannot name the link that was broken, cut off is the wrong answer. Cut out deletes a member from inside a set: two paragraphs from an article, sugar from a diet, a step from a routine. Here you cannot name a link, only a container. One is a cut wire; the other is a cut list. That test settles most questions in this pair, including the sneaky ones where a village is cut off (isolated) rather than cut out (deleted from a map).

3. The blade itself travels — in, across, through

In this group CUT quietly drops its object and the subject becomes the thing doing the moving. That is why these three feel so different from the first six. Cut in enters something already running, from the side — a conversation, a queue, a lane of traffic. Cut across crosses dividing lines, and its subject is usually abstract: an issue, a problem, a demand cuts across caste, party or region. Notice that a person rarely cuts across anything except a field. Cut through goes in one side and out the other, so its object is always a barrier — fog, noise, a crowd, red tape, delay. The difference that gets tested is across versus through: across ignores a boundary, through defeats an obstacle. An issue cuts across groups; an application cuts through paperwork.

4. The frozen two — cut out for, cut down to size

These two come from trades, not from grammar, and no amount of particle logic will produce them. Cut out for is a tailor’s phrase: cloth cut to a pattern fits the body it was cut for, so a person cut out for a job was shaped for it. It appears only after be, and in SSC papers it is usually negative — not cut out for. Cut down to size is a carpenter’s phrase: timber planed back to the mark. Applied to a person it means pride reduced to the real measurement. Both must be learnt whole, and both are worth learning, because they are the two items in today’s list most likely to appear as an idiom question rather than a fill-in-the-blank.

📌 One line per group, write it on your hand: down / back / short — it shrinks and stays (how much vs how long). off / out — it leaves (a broken link vs a deleted member). in / across / through — the blade moves (enter sideways, ignore a boundary, defeat an obstacle). cut out for / cut down to size — no logic, pure idiom.

🎯 Practice Quiz — 10 Questions

1. The doctor advised him to ________ on tea and finish his revision at night instead.

✅ cut down — the quantity of tea goes lower, the tea does not disappear. Cut off would stop the supply altogether.

2. After the shop closed, the family had to ________ on everything except books.

✅ cut back — money and spending always pull back, not down. Remember: quantity cuts down, a budget cuts back.

3. Nine days of flood ________ the village from the district headquarters.

✅ cut off — a link that already existed was severed. Cut out would mean the village was deleted from a list, not isolated.

4. The editor ________ two paragraphs because the article was too long.

✅ cut out — a part is removed from inside a whole. Cut off needs a connection to break; a paragraph has none.

5. He is a patient teacher, but he is simply not ________ administration.

✅ cut out for — the tailoring idiom for being made to fit a role. It almost always appears after be, and in SSC usually in the negative.

6. Please do not ________ when someone else is still speaking.

✅ cut in — you enter an ongoing conversation sideways. Cut off would mean you ended it completely, not interrupted it.

7. Unemployment is one problem that ________ caste, religion and region.

✅ cuts across — it ignores the dividing lines. The subject here is an issue, which is the usual subject of this verb.

8. One carefully worded application ________ four months of paperwork.

✅ cut through — the obstacle was pierced from one side to the other. Cut across crosses a boundary; cut through goes past a barrier.

9. Heavy rain ________ the second session of the seminar.

✅ cut short — the duration was ended early. Cut down would reduce how much there was, not when it stopped.

10. He boasted all week, and then one honest mock test ________.

✅ cut him down to size — the fixed idiom for puncturing arrogance. Learn it whole; the particles here carry no separate meaning.

✍️ Cloze Test — Fill in the Blanks

Type the correct phrasal verb (any tense) and press Check.

  1. I ________ my revision sources from nine books to two.
  2. The flood ________ the village for nine days.
  3. She ________ sugar in March and never went back.
  4. He is honest, but he is not ________ this kind of job.
  5. Please do not ________ while your friend is answering.
  6. Rain ________ the second session of the seminar.

🏠 Homework — Write It Once, Remember It Forever

Take your notebook and write one original sentence for each of these, using your own life:

  1. cut down (one thing you will reduce this week)
  2. cut back (an expense you can lower without pain)
  3. cut off (a place, a supply or a contact that was cut)
  4. cut out (a habit you removed for good)
  5. cut out for (a job you believe you are suited to)
  6. cut in (the last time someone interrupted you)
  7. cut across (a problem in your area that ignores all groups)
  8. cut through (a delay you got past by being direct)
  9. cut short (a plan that ended before time)
  10. cut down to size (use it about a situation, never about a person you know)

Writing beats re-reading. Ten sentences today are worth two hours of passive revision.

🔗 Continue the Series

That’s Day 8 done. The CUT family has a reputation for being the messiest set in the syllabus, and it is really only four verbs wearing the same coat. Carry one habit out of this page: before you choose a particle, look at the noun and ask what happened to it. If it got smaller, you want down, back or short; if it vanished, off or out; if nothing was cut at all and something moved instead, in, across or through. Revise this page tomorrow morning for five minutes, then again after three days. When you want it drilled under a clock, the SSC Practice Center and the Smart Study Tools have timed English sets; the SSC English Hub keeps every lesson in one place, and the Vocab Series runs alongside this one. See you in Day 9 with the DO family. Just focus more!! 💪
