Hello everyone, I hope you are all good. Welcome to the Phrasal Verb Series – Day 5! In Day 4 we closed the BRING family. Today it is CARRY — and the difficulty here is the mirror image of yesterday’s. BRING had five verbs that all read like “cause”; CARRY has four that all read like “finish” — out, through, off, on. What separates them is not the meaning but what else is sitting in the sentence: an instruction, an obstacle, a prize, or an activity already running. Learn to look for that, and this family stops being guesswork. Read the story once, learn the meanings, then play the games and take the quiz.

📖 The Story — Kavita Carries It Through
Kavita’s name on the list was not the end of anything. The office sent her a page of instructions, and she had to carry out every one of them — twelve forms, three affidavits, and one photograph the clerk rejected twice without explaining why.
For the whole of February she carried a thin green folder around with her: every certificate, every receipt, in order, two copies each. “Paper is the one thing nobody at a counter can argue with,” Arun told her.
In March she went back to her old college and carried off the district English prize — a hundred rupees and a certificate, nothing more. But it carried weight with the uncle who had once called coaching a waste of money, and that was worth more than the hundred rupees.
Then she nearly spoiled it. One mock went well — 172 — and she got completely carried away: two days of no study and a great deal of talking. Arun said nothing for those two days, then put the score chart in front of her. The next mock was 141.
So they fixed it on paper instead of arguing. The six study hours she had lost were carried forward into the next fortnight, and the March backlog she had not finished carried over into April untouched. Nothing was written off; everything was only moved. “Keep a balance sheet, not a diary,” Arun said.
April was the hardest month, and what carried her through was not motivation — it was the plan: one topic, one test, one honest review. On the worst days she would carry on with just the test and skip the rest. When the final list came out in May, the smell of that regional office carried her back to the February morning when the clerk had rejected her photograph for the second time. This time she laughed about it.

🧭 The Four Groups — Why the Particle Decides
CARRY always means bear a load along. The particle tells you where that load is going — to a finish line, forward in time, or into somebody’s head — and all ten verbs fall into four clean groups.
1. The load reaches a finish line — out, through, off
All three translate as “accomplish”, which is exactly why they are grouped in exam options. Separate them by what else the sentence contains. Carry out needs an instruction that came from somewhere — an order, a plan, a duty, a survey, a threat: somebody decided, you executed. Carry through needs resistance — opposition, poverty, illness, a reform nobody wanted; take the obstacle out of the sentence and carry through stops sounding right. Carry off needs a prize or an audience — a medal, a role, a speech, a bluff. Nothing won and nobody watching? Then it is not off.
2. The load moves in time — on, forward, over
Here the object decides. Carry on needs something already running; you cannot carry on a task you have not started. Carry forward needs a countable quantity that you move deliberately — a balance, unused leave, leftover vacancies, a figure at the foot of a page. Carry over needs a state that continues by itself — a habit, a mood, a quarrel, a pending agenda item. The real test is agency: you carry a balance forward, but a bad temper carries itself over.
3. The load moves inside a person — away, back, around
Each of these three has a different thing in the driving seat. With carry away the emotion is the agent and you are the object — which is why got carried away is almost the only form you will meet in an exam. With carry back the agent is a song, a smell or a photograph, and the destination is your memory. With carry around you are the agent: the load, a file or a grudge, stays with you.
4. The load keeps no particle at all — carry weight
CARRY’s literal sense is to bear a mass while moving, and carry weight is the one high-frequency item that keeps that picture almost untouched: an opinion with mass is one that is felt. It takes no particle — it takes with, as in “carries weight with the committee”. In a fill-in-the-blank, that missing particle is itself the clue.
